Nothing is more gratifying than cooking for our family. The same goes for making special treats for our four-legged family members. I began making homemade treats for Baylie when she was a puppy. Homemade treats give me the assurance of knowing that I’m feeding her treats made with wholesome, human-grade ingredients. The Peanut Butter Dog Treat recipe I use consists of very few basic ingredients that make them super easy to make.
I use the base recipe and vary ingredients at times by including either ripe bananas, cooked sweet potato or even applesauce. (Keep in mind you may have to add additional flour or reduce the liquid ingredients to account for the liquid in the sweet potato and applesauce.) Baking doggie treats is a great activity to get the kids involved. What child doesn’t enjoy baking in the kitchen with mom or dad. Our friend, Ella, even got her grandfather involved in the fun!
We were thrilled when our friends at DogTipper.com sent us a set of their dog-themed cookie cutters from their PetTipper store. They are super cute and come in a beautiful organza bag. Not only are the cutters great for making a special snack for your dog, they are great for baking fun cookies for the humans as well. You can purchase an assortment of cute PetTipper dog cookie cutters and other pet-themed cookie cutters here.
Peanut Butter & Jelly Dog Biscuits
2½ cups whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup water
2 tablespoons apple jelly (substitute with honey if you prefer)
Mix all ingredients until you have a firm dough.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough about 1/4 – 1/2 inch thick (1/4 if you want them crunchy) and use a cookie cutter to make fun shapes. The treats barely spread and rise so you can space them closely together but without touching. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 350° 15-20 minutes or until golden on an ungreased cookie sheet. Flip them midway through the cooking process. Cool completely before placing them in airtight container.
