It was so unexpected that It almost seems like a dream. However, our altered daily routine is a constant reminder that Smoki will not be with us this holiday season. We will miss Smoki’s sudden appearance in the kitchen once the aroma of turkey begins to permeate the house. I think she could actually smell chicken or turkey cooking from outside. She always got the first taste; while Baylie waited patiently.
If you have a large extended family, caring for your pet(s) while you are sick or hospitalized, most likely, will not be an issue. For approximately 96 million singles in the U.S., it causes great concern. I was pleasantly surprised by one of the questions posed to me by the admitting hospitalist during my last hospital stay: “Do you have pets at home that depend on you for their care?” This simple question speaks volumes in how we, as a society, see our pets within the family unit. I was blown away and quickly answered: “Yes, I do; one 85 pound dog and a cat“. I knew I liked this doctor right away and was tempted to pull out my IPhone to show him snapshots, but I figured that would be a bit over the top.
Some of the coldest weather in years is hitting the eastern half of the nation as far south as Alabama and Florida. Many areas will see epic snowfall and life-threatening temperatures. Even here in the deep South, we are going to see temps breaking record lows. In my area, the mercury will fall to 11 degrees tomorrow night with a wind chill of -5 degrees.
Research suggests that a mere 8% of New Year’s goals are met. I admit, Baylie and I fell short in keeping our 2014 New Year’s resolutions. After all, Baylie was a naïve pup when she posted her first resolutions for the New Year and for myself, I offer no excuses other than it’s been a trying year with many unexpected challenges.
Nothing like the feeling of peace, tranquility and warmth of sitting in front of a roaring fire sipping your favorite beverage before retiring for the evening. With the first really cold weather of the season bearing down on us, folks are cranking up the fireplace for the first time of the season.
