In the spirit of the holidays, and in remembrance of Smoki, we have a new giveaway for all of our cat friends! We already know how much our Baylie loves her Zuke’s, but we found out that Smoki was just as much a fan of her Zuke’s G-Zees Cat Treats.
It was so unexpected that It almost seems like a dream. However, our altered daily routine is a constant reminder that Smoki will not be with us this holiday season. We will miss Smoki’s sudden appearance in the kitchen once the aroma of turkey begins to permeate the house. I think she could actually smell chicken or turkey cooking from outside. She always got the first taste; while Baylie waited patiently.
If you have a large extended family, caring for your pet(s) while you are sick or hospitalized, most likely, will not be an issue. For approximately 96 million singles in the U.S., it causes great concern. I was pleasantly surprised by one of the questions posed to me by the admitting hospitalist during my last hospital stay: “Do you have pets at home that depend on you for their care?” This simple question speaks volumes in how we, as a society, see our pets within the family unit. I was blown away and quickly answered: “Yes, I do; one 85 pound dog and a cat“. I knew I liked this doctor right away and was tempted to pull out my IPhone to show him snapshots, but I figured that would be a bit over the top.
Shedding of your cat’s Winter undercoat, along with excessive grooming, can only result in one thing, HAIRBALLS! Cats can spend up to 10 percent of their waking hours grooming themselves by licking their fur. They have an amazing built-in barbed, self-grooming tool -their tongue- which can result in a whole ‘lotta’ hairballs. Continue reading →
It’s been over two years since I rescued Baylie; a great pyrenees/border collie mix. She has grown from four pounds to ninety pounds, and I don’t thinks she is done yet. My biggest concern when I brought Baylie into the home was how my cat, Smoki, would adjust to the new addition. I now can say, Smoki, weighing in at just under ten pounds, and I have established ourselves as the alpha dogs of the pack. It didn’t happen overnight. It took months of patience and diligence on our part.
Smoki, at twelve years of age, didn’t quite know what to think of Baylie when she arrived on the scene but one thing for certain, she wanted no part of this odd creature. Even though in the beginning Baylie was much smaller than Smoki, I knew the groundwork had to be set to bring cohesiveness between the two since Baylie would grow to be a very large dog. It took repetitive slaps to the face and a lot of fat tails and hissing by Smoki to put her into hierarchy status over Baylie.
People think we Southerners are accustomed to the scorching Summer heat and humidity. We are not and neither are our pets. We take precautions by limiting our activities and that of our pets during the hottest hours of the day and by staying hydrated. If we are hot, more than likely, our pets are too.
