After adopting my six-week old Great Pyrenees/Border Collie mix puppy, it didn’t take long for me to realize that dogs consume and EXPECT mass quantities of dog treats. That multiplies when you are puppy training, as every command requires a treat. I also noticed that dog treats tend to have a higher price point than cat treats. A bag of treats for my cat, Smoki, lasts forever. Rather than mortgage the house, I decided to try some of the recipes I found on Pinterest. I admit, I was skeptical; especially because the ingredients seemed so bland. I picked a peanut butter dog treat recipe and tweaked it a bit to include bacon. It was super easy to make; like rolling out cookie dough. As soon as began rolling them out, Baylie began to go nuts over the aroma of peanut butter. The finished product was fantastic! Yes, I sampled them just to make certain– A doggie version of the biscotti. Be sure to bake them long enough to become crispy and keep them in an air-tight container in the fridge. They’ll keep up to two weeks, but I doubt they will be around that long.

2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 cup peanut butter
1/3 cup skim milk
3 tsp. bacon grease
2 slices bacon
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a bowl, combine all ingredients. Turn out dough on a lightly floured surface and knead. if dough is too loose, add additonal wheat flower. If to tight, add more milk. Roll out to 1/4-inch thickness and cut out shapes. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake 20 minutes or until lightly brown. Cool on a rack and store in an airtight container in refrigerator.
Makes about 20-30 dog biscuits.
